Yes, it’s one of my favorite places as well. I love to be there every time. And it always surprises me with its landscapes.
So would you like to visit East Sikkim?
Before you plan your trip let’s read this article and understand East Sikkim and the places you should visit.
East Sikkim Tourism
I have visited East Sikkim twice now, and I witnessed two different types of landscapes each time.
A part of East Sikkim shares borders with China as well. Nathu La – This is a famous tourist attraction as well.
East is mostly famous for its Zik Zak Road, Changu Lake, and Nathu La among tourists and receives a huge number of tourists every year.
How to Reach
If you are planning to visit East Sikkim, then you have to come down to Gangtok and from there you can opt for a private car or a shared cab to visit East Sikkim.
If you are coming from Kolkata, Howrah, or any place that lies along this route, then you have a lot of options to reach Gangtok.
You can come to New Jalpaiguri Station by train or come to Siliguri bus stand by Bus from Kolkata or Howrah.
Or if you are coming from any other city, then you can take a flight to Bagdogra. Check out all the reputed apps like Goibibo, Makemytrip, etc, and book your flight to Bagdogra.
Reach Gangtok by Car
Once you reach Siliguri, Bagdogra, or NJP station then book a private cab or a shared cab (If you are traveling solo) for Gangtok. It will take around 4-5 hours (Depending on road conditions and traffic) to reach Gangtok.
A private cab can cost you around 2800 – 4500 INR based on the cab you are opting for (Price can be up and down during the season or for any other reason). So make sure to check it out before you visit.
A shared cab can cost you approximately 400 – 500 INR Approximately to reach Gangtok.
Reach Gangtok by Bus
From the Siliguri bus stand, you can reach Gangtok directly by Sikkim Nationalised Transport bus. The average bus fare costs around 190 – 350 INR per passenger.
Did you know Gangtok has an Airport as well?
Yes, Gangtok has its own airport as well. It’s called Pakyong Airport. It’s a tiny airport but you can choose this option as well to reach Gangtok.
The airport is located in Pakyong town about 31km south of Gangtok. At 4646 ft, Pakyong Airport is one of the five highest airports in India.
Visit East Sikkim from Gangtok
So you have reached Gangtok, I suggest you take a rest and enjoy the Capital city of Sikkim Gangtok.
On the next day, book your cab and start the journey toward East Sikkim.
Tourists generally book a complete Tour package from Travel Agencies. There is a lot of paperwork, ILP (Inner Line Permits) that requires you to explore East Sikkim. As it’s on the border side, you need permission to visit a few places.
You can do it by yourself as well, but it’s better to ignore the side hustle and enjoy the beauty.
Best Places to Visit in East Sikkim
I love every village and spot in the Entire Sikkim. It’s really hard for me to list out the best among them. Still, I am sharing a few main tourist places that you must visit if you are planning your trip to East Sikkim.
Tsongo Lake
Tsongo Lake or Changu Lake is one of the most stunning places to visit in East Sikkim. Located at an altitude of 12,400 ft (3,753 meters) above sea level, Changu Lake is one of the highest lakes in India. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.
History:
Tsongo Lake is a sacred lake in the Buddhist tradition. It is believed that the lake was formed when Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, struck the ground with his vajra (ritual scepter).
Size:
Tsongo Lake is a small lake, with a surface area of about 24.47 hectares (60.5 acres).
Color:
The color of Tsongo Lake changes depending on the season. In the summer, the lake is a beautiful turquoise color. In the winter, the lake is frozen and the color is a deep blue.
Activities:
Here you can take a Yak ride around the lake and a Gondola Ride to the top to enjoy a top view of the lake.
Best Time to Visit:
- April to June: The summer months offer pleasant weather and blooming flowers, providing a picturesque backdrop to Tsomgo Lake.
- October to December: The autumn and early winter months offer clear skies and stunning views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
Weather Conditions:
- Summer: The temperature ranges from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F), with cool mornings and evenings. Carry light woolen and comfortable clothing during this season.
- Winter: The temperature can drop to sub-zero levels, with heavy snowfall. Be prepared with heavy woolens, jackets, and snow boots to tackle the cold weather.
Permit:
You need an Inner Line Permit to visit this place. The permits are issued at the Police Check Post. Foreigners can also get it at Sikkim Tourism & Civil Aviation Department. The easiest is to apply through a travel agent or tour operator one day in advance.
Nathu la Pass
Located at an altitude of 13,123 ft above sea level, Nathu La Pass is One of the highest motorable passes in the world.
This pass is also a part of the Old Silk Route. Currently, this place manages a lot of tourist traffic like it managed trader traffic earlier.
The pass remains closed on Monday and Tuesday. Domestic tourists can visit the Nathula Pass in Sikkim on any other day of the week. The minimum temperature during the summer months is approximately 10 degrees.
How to Reach Nathu La Pass:
Nathu La Pass is located approximately 54 kilometers (34 miles) east of Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. You can hire a private vehicle or join a guided tour from Gangtok to reach the pass.
Best Time to Visit:
May to October: These months offer the most favorable weather conditions, with clear skies and relatively milder temperatures. The pass is usually closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
Weather Conditions:
- Summer: The temperature during the summer months ranges from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) during the daytime, but it can drop to near-freezing temperatures at night. Dress in layers and carry light woolen.
- Monsoon: The monsoon season, from June to September, experiences heavy rainfall and landslides, making it less favorable for a visit.
- Autumn: September to November provides pleasant weather and clear views of the surrounding mountains.
- Winter: December to March is extremely cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. The pass remains closed during this time.
Tips and Precautions:
- Acclimatize properly before visiting Nathu La Pass due to the high altitude. Stay hydrated and avoid overexertion.
- Carry warm clothing, including heavy woolen, jackets, and gloves, as temperatures can be extremely cold, especially during winter.
- Respect the rules and regulations at the pass and follow the instructions of your guide or local authorities.
- Due to the sensitive location, photography restrictions may apply. Always seek permission before taking photographs.
- Be aware of the military presence in the area and maintain proper decorum.
- Check the weather conditions and road accessibility before planning your visit, as the pass may close temporarily due to inclement weather.
Permits:
Indian nationals require a special permit called the Nathu La Pass Permit to visit the pass. This permit can be obtained from the Sikkim Tourism Office in Gangtok. Foreign nationals are not currently allowed to visit Nathu La Pass.
Old & New Baba Mandir
Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas in the Indian state of Sikkim, Old, and New Baba Mandir are two revered spiritual sanctuaries that hold deep significance for devotees and travelers alike.

Gangtok: Both Old and New Baba Mandir can be reached from Gangtok. You can hire a private vehicle or join a guided tour to visit these sacred sites.

Best Time to Visit East Sikkim
East Sikkim receives heavy snowfall in the month of December end and January. So most of the places and roads are blocked during that situation.
Later in mid-February roads started to open and you can visit in the month of end February or March to witness the Snow in East Sikkim.
Sometimes you can witness snow in mid-December and November as well, but that’s all about luck and weather condition.
But if you are someone like me who is in love with the landscape, then you should try May & June.
Other than that, September, October & November can also be good times to Visit East Sikkim. You can get clear weather at that time.
So it’s completely up to you and your taste.
Foods in East Sikkim
Honestly, don’t expect too much luxury in such remote areas.
So sometimes it’s getting worse when there are very bad weather conditions.
So you can expect a very ordinary type of food in the homestays and obviously, if you are in the mountain, then don’t forget to have maggie, momo, and thukpa.
